Grind size changes the taste of your home coffee more than almost anything else. This guide tells you where to start for each method.

Grind by method
- Espresso: fine.
- Moka pot: fine to medium-fine.
- V60 and other cone filters: medium-fine.
- Drip machine: medium.
- French press: coarse.
- Cold brew: coarse.
These are starting points. Every grinder and every coffee needs its own adjustment.
Why it matters
Water pulls flavor out of coffee. If the grind is too fine, it pulls too much and tastes bitter. If it is too coarse, it pulls too little and tastes sour and thin.
How to adjust
- Bitter or dry: grind coarser.
- Sour or thin: grind finer.
- Change one step at a time and taste again.
Tips
- Grind right before brewing. Ground coffee loses aroma fast.
- A blade grinder gives uneven particles. A burr grinder is a better choice.
- No grinder? Buy coffee ground for your method.
Whole bean or ground
Our roasted coffee comes whole bean or ground, depending on your method. To start with V60, see the step-by-step recipe.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the same grind for everything?

How often should I change the grind?
